Rivalry renewed: Evansville and Valparaiso to continue long-standing history

http://www.courierpress.com/story/sports/college/evansville/2018/01/23/rivalry-renewed-evansville-and-valparaiso-continue-long-standing-history/1059154001/

The two programs have only met three times since 1999, but have a long history with each other that dates to the early 1930s. The Purple Aces are the Crusaders’ third most-common opponent in program history with 83 matchups, most of which are from when they shared membership in the Indiana Intercollegiate Conference from 1925-50 and Indiana Collegiate Conference from ’50-77.

Valparaiso enters Wednesday's game with a record of 11-10 and 2-6 in the MVC. The Crusaders opened the season winning their first eight games, but have gone 3-10 since that time. Pacing the squad is Tevonn Walker with 15.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest; he also has a team-high 35 steals. Bakari Evelyn checks in with 11.1 PPG and scored a team-high 19 points on Sunday against Loyola. Center Derrik Smits is the son of former Indiana Pacers start Rik Smits.

Evansville opens as a 4 point underdog.

Go Aces!!!

Hard for me to believe Aces are favorite. I look for another loss. Evansville used to be light years ahead of the Valparaiso program. Then the Crusaders made a great hire in Homer Drew and they have been terrific since then. Again, it's about finding the right coach....

The Aces are NOT favorites. As of 11:00AM Vegas has them as 3 1/2 point underdogs.

Anyone that has complaints about the Ford Center needs to check out Valpo's facilities tonight. They play in a glorified HS gym that would be the envy every D3 school around. Of course that means nothing in the grand scheme of things, and their capacity (5,000) would probably be big enough to house UE's home crowd most games.

We'll see how we match up with their size.

If we don’t match up with their size, it’s on us.

Trust me on this one.

Aces starters were Taylor, Chatkavicus, Smith, Riley, Simmons. Dainius getting his first start in several weeks.

It's laughable we don't use the ball screen or drive and kick on offense.

No high ball screens, pick and rolls, pick and pops, penetration kick outs, back screen lobs, etc. nothing new at all.

Valpo is far superior athletically too - sad!

It's good to see someone else other than Taylor take a shot and score. Smith and Simmons score 5 quick points.
Let's get this McCarty Party started.
