Game Thread: Northern Iowa @ Aces

Postby E-Villan » Tue Jan 30, 2018 10:00 am

This may be the biggest game of the year for us..sadly, not for championship implications, but for any hope of avoiding Thursday. A home game with the team a game behind you is critical. A win, and we put them 2 games back, with a return still to Frostbite Falls. This will keep us closer to the logjam in the middle. A loss, and we are tied for 9th, with the dreaded return game up there still to play. A win would also even the all-time series with them at 26-26. Surprising considering it seems Jacobson has had his way with Marty for years. I look for a defensive game, with a lot of screens by us, and flopping and grabbing by them.

I watched most of the UNI/Loyola game on Sunday at Loyola. UNI made a late run but it was a large Loyola lead most of the second half. I've seen other games of theirs also.I thought Koch in the middle had been huge a few games earlier in the year and Carlson not too productive. Then the roles were reversed on Sunday. Koch sat a lot from early foul trouble and maybe being in the dog house. Carlson is a good left-handed 3pt shooter from the top of the key and also fakes and drives well. The key to the game may be shutting down 6'4" starting freshman guard Pickford. Second on the team in scoring and leading the team in rebounds (8.4 per game). UNI loves the 3pt shot. Surprisingly only Lohaus and Halderman shoot over 40% and neither one has started a game this year.
Great defense and good offensive production out of Smith, Simmons, Frederking, and KJ should gives the Aces the edge.

All games are critical at this point in hope of avoiding Thursday night. Would have never dreamed Northern Iowa would have such a poor record after playing very well for most of their OOC schedule. Aces must stop Koch to win - plain and simple. Will need a strong game from DC, and Smith. Taylor, and Frederking need to hit shots. Its a winnable game. As always the Aces need to draw fouls and keep turnovers at a minimum. This could be a very slow game.

Interesting, we were a 5 1/2 point favorite against
the second place team in the conference. And they already beat us by double digits.Vegas is tough

For this game, if we score 70+ we should win, probably even 65+. If it's one of those ugly games in the 50s I don't have a good feeling about us winning. We've lost so many games like that over the years. We've been doing much better the last few games because we've done more attacking early in the shot clock. That needs to continue.
Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be.

With Missouri State's loss at home to ISU-Red last night, Evansville's game with N. Iowa becomes even more significant. With an Aces win tonight they will be tied with the Bears for 7th place - on the brink of not being a Thursday night team. C'mon Aces!

Drake got off to a 4-0 start. Which was great. But, I think they are starting to become who they really are. If given the choice to play Drake or UNI in a must win game.... I'm picking to play Drake.
