Game Thread - Aces @ Illinois State

Evansville (5-6) at Illinois State (6-5). Today at 3pm.

I watched Illinois State crush the Bears this week in Springfield. They didn't look unbeatable, but their inside game is probably a lot better than ours. I missed the game at the Ford Center, driving for the Holidays, so not sure what the first matchup looked like.

To me, we outplayed them in the first game. Unfortunately, we went into sort of a stall game down the stretch and it allowed them to make enough threes to put us away. If I remember right, we were beat 11 to 1 from the three point line in that game.

Hopefully, this game will have a different outcome, but I wouldn't count on it.

Anything under 10-12 would be a good loss, if you are into good losses.

With a coach in his 11th season, there is no such thing as a good loss in the MVC.

I said previously if we wanted to stay out of Thursday, assuming we somehow beat INST and MSU on the road, and assuming we can hold home games against Valpo and SIU, we still needed to win a minimum of one against ILST, Loyola and UNI. I would be fine with getting one of the unexpected ones today. Plus, a win would bring ILST into a tie with us.

If I was betting though, I would take ILST to cover.

A win here would sure be sweet. Here's hoping the basketball gods are looking down on the Aces today.

When taking a peek at Redbird fan forum, I noticed they have a promotion for today's game that is an annual event.
They call it 'Taste of Redbird,' which is kind of a corny name, but evidently, it's popular, and brings in the so called casual fan for maybe a taste of a Redbirds game. It starts at 12:30, and goes to around 2:30, a half an hour before tip off.
They have several food vendors, and lots of free- that's big with young parents, I'm sure- Free games and activities for the kids.
They're expecting one of their largest crowds of the season, even for what one poster called, " Possibly our least exciting Valley opponent."
Maybe playing in front of a big, and probably loud crowd, will pump up the Aces to try to spoil the big party.
As for the game, if Illinois State doesn't press UE for at least parts of the game, they're doing Evansville a favor. Turning the ball over and getting fast breaks will keep the crowd energized. Not to mention, put a short handed Aces team in a hole.
Taking care of the basketball, and keeping the game "ugly" and low scoring, could take the crowd out of it, and give UE a shot in the last few minutes to steal one.

Yes, that's how promotions are supposed to work. Take a game that may be less appealing because it is a 3pm tip time, or because the opponent was projected 9th in the league, and find a way to sell tickets for that game.
