Since I had forgotten this story, I just had a chance to pull up the newspaper archives. The headline from Feb. 18, 1990:
"Dayton has nose for the ball in beating the Aces"
The article confirms it was pretty much as said...first Shreffler lightly plunked Coffee in the head with the inbound pass, then Chris Mack did it with much more force on the nose. Crews' only quote on the matter " I thought both were good passes. Anybody who watches us play would know those were passes. Really, you're supposed to bounce the ball off of the guy in those situations."
