WSU Prez: "We've got to do better" on enrollment

WSU's basketball success led to a huge increase in applications and a modest increase in student enrollment to Wichita State, but it appears to have been short-lived, with a decline of 400 students expected this coming semester.

Speaking of enrollment. I heard a few weeks ago that UE is short another 100 students at least. Has anybody heard about that? Any news on incoming class numbers?

Quote from the Courier & Press about a week ago.

"At UE, there are 2,097 full-time undergraduate students and Doctor of Physical Therapy students for the 2015-16 school year. Compared to 2,232 a year ago, this represents a decrease of about 6 percent."

Thanks TOM. I did not see that article. As a UE fan that is very concerning. UE is less than 100 above 2000 students. They have declined in numbers every year for the past 4/5 years or so (not sure exact number). With a small school like UE, enrollment is a huge issue for supplying financial support to the sports. And we continue to go downhill. Certainly not helpful to the Coaches at UE im sure. Budget cuts?

I think there are two things that can really help increase enrollment.

1. Medical Center opening downtown. This was also mentioned in the article; Here's what it said:

"UE President Thomas Kazee said in a statement that officials expect enrollment to grow next year with high interest in the new physician assistant program, which will be housed in the future Downtown multi-institutional academic health science and research center.

“Interest in the program from potential students has been strong,” Kazee said. “Majors in the health field are increasingly popular. And in addition to the new PA program, we’ve also added health communications and have a very strong public health program as well.”

2. A big year for the basketball program. Several people on here have posted multiple times about the increase in enrollment that happens at universities when they get to the tourney and win a couple games. It's huge! That would play a huge role in getting students back to UE. Which is why so many of us on here harp on how important it is for the UE administration to place a lot of importance on having a good basketball team.

Its not pretty - UE's enrollment has now fallen 25% in 6 years. Enrollment was 2799 starting the 2009 school year.

The enrollment at UE and many other high priced, private colleges is likely to continue to decrease. It's just too expensive when you compare tuition to the state schools. I am a UE graduate and proud of it, but it's just a sign of the times.
