Illinois - Nov 8th Scouting report

Postby Austin Ace » Sat Sep 15, 2018 10:35 am

The season starts in less than two months with an exhibition on November 3rd and then we open on the road with Illinois on November 8th. So I thought I would start a "scouting" thread on the Illini.

They play in a rugged Power 5 conference but SI predicts them to finish 13th in the Big 10 only ahead of Rutgers and just behind Northwestern.

13. Illinois: Brad Underwood has the Illini on the right track with a top-25 recruiting class led by four-star Ayo Dosunmu, and promising sophomore Trent Frazier returns.

Do we have any chance to pull off the upset? Thoughts?

The Illinois fans obviously have this as a win for them:

It's so early in the season that "W" teams like UE can sometimes sneak up on a P5. Illinois will not know much about us, with change in tempo and scheme. If we have a couple of guys get hot, and provided we play some good D, I'd like to think we have a shot. I can't think of another team in the Big 10 that we'd want as a test of where we are to start the year. I also don't think it hurts to have Sam and Art to practice against to get a feel of P5 type players.

We'll also have tapes of U of I from last year, and Underwood's offense and defense are not likely to have changed much. Personnel, yes, but his system will be similar.

I will say that I believe we will win, and fairly convincingly. I think this UE team will turn some heads this season, and with the problems going on at Illinois, and Underwood trying to turn it around, we may have caught them at the right time. I will say we pull the upset by 6-8 points.

Here is their roster and coaching staff:

Obviously one of their assistants is former UE assistant coach Geoff Alexander.

Looking at the Sagarin Ratings from last year I would guess Evansville would be about a nine point underdog when the odds open. Total speculation but my best guess factoring in the home court advantage for the Illini.

I think due to Aces learning a new system and while young the illini win this one by 12-15.

The odds are that Illinois will win but we have a better chance against Illinois than Xavier IMHO. Based solely on last year’s ratings (as there is not much else to go on) I could see Xavier as a 19 point favorite over us. But again this is speculation based on how teams finished last year.
