Porter Moser shuns St. Johns

Postby Ace78 » Mon Apr 15, 2019 11:58 pm

Word on twitter is that Loyola's Porter Moser has been offered the St. John's coaching job. Big loss for Loyola if that is true and he accepts it.

The Valley has a history of its coaches moving to bigger and better things.

Good for Porter if this is true. I think he would be a good fit there and no doubt be paid quite well. Definitely one of my most favorite coaches. Classy guy and relates very well to his players.

The one I feel sorry for is Sister Jean. The basketball team gave so much joy to her life and if Porter leaves I hope it will not lead to a major letdown.

I think the Loyola position would be an attractive one. Nice facilities, accademics, attractive campus., dynamic city. THeir are stumbling blocks for sure but still not a bad place to go

Can't blame him for going after it but I'm not optimistic about longevity there. They didn't give revered alum Chris Mullins much time. His track record at the mid major level isn't stellar by any stretch. Anybody remember a guy named Merfeld?

Lots on Twitter about this also. Most SJU fans that posted are against him. They want Tim Cluess from Iona. Two million a year and eight years is the offer.

Supposedly Porter is wavering now. Don't blame him, this isn't the slam dunk move some are making it out to be. St. John's will be a total rebuild. I guess they are higher up in the pecking order, but they certainly aren't a blueblood. All he has to do is look across town to see how low a program can be in the Big East.

He has a lifetime gig at Loyola if he wants it, makes decent money, and Chicago has nearly everything NYC has, with less headaches. His leash wouldn't be all that long there, and realistically, he could be a failed, unemployed coach in 4-5 years.

I completely agree, St. John's is in the Big East - but that's about all it has going for it. I just don't see them rising up and competing with the Xavier's, Villanova's, Seton Hall's, etc and they haven't been good for a very long time. They got extremely lucky to get in this year to even get it (they played a whopping one road non con game at Rutgers - that alone should have been reason to keep them out of the tourney). Schools like that are the worst place for coaches to go. Fan's have delusions of them dominating because they are in the Big East - if they don't make the tourney they will run him out in 3 years. He won't have even close to the amount of time he was given at Loyola before he had success. Most MVC coaches will at least get 5 years to show some type of progress - most will get more if they show some signs of competing.
8-19 .....1986
16-12 ....1987 --- MCC Champ
21-8 .....1988 --- NIT
25-6 .....1989 --- NCAA
Key point, be patient, never judge a coach on Year 1!
